I often teach new players how to play Smite by having them play Tyr, Chaac, Maui, or Hercules in Conquest until we start winning consecutive matches. Then we start on Ranked. This sounds like a terrible way to teach someone to play, but in reality it allows you a base of knowledge to learn about other gods, and their strengths, and weaknesses. It also allows new players to learn how to play gods which you may not see a lot anymore, and teaches them how to build in ways that still work cohesively in modern games. More importantly however it creates a difficult situation that can only be improved by experimentation, and breaks damaging stereotypes in Mobas like how some people treat the roles like they're class-specific where in reality there's far more ways to play, and win than just the meta. Jungle Hercules is still a thing, and never stopped being a thing simply because it always was all about timing, Hercules used to be stronger sure but a well timed Blink + Dash is still one of the best ganks you can do in Smite as it surprises the enemy, deals a ton of damage to them, and stuns them around one of your allies or under a tower. Then you can use your 2 to keep the enemy in that situation even if they try to escape and with your heal you can sustain heavy damage, such as when you gank duo lane. With Chaac not only is he a good solo but he can also be a good CC support by using threat, and slows to put the enemy ADC at a disadvantage, and allowing your ADC to ramp up much faster, additionally his heals, and teleportation allow him to body block to a much higher standard than most gods, and still escape safely, or he can ult to secure a kill / save an ally. Tyr is basically Hercules except tankier, and he doesn't need the blink. his ult can do that job, and he's much better at stopping in-coming ganks from enemy junglers. And Maui is Maui. The point of this exorcise is: 1. Give new players a base god that they can fall back on, and which may not be expected by enemies. 2. Give new players time to experiment, and try utterly insane things before they get stuck into the meta. 3. Prove to new players that skill is a larger factor than picks, although picks are still important. 4. Promote creativity in new players which can be extremely important in higher level play in ranked. Oh, and I should also clarify I do this up to Diamond Ranked, and it's still viable. Of course I tend to stay in Diamond Ranked not because I'm not skilled enough to go higher... It's because I have a habit of tanking my rank by playing Hun Batz Support because win or lose it's usually a hilarious game. That moment when you enter lane, you see the enemy carry on their own and think it'll be easy ga-SUDDENLY MONKEY! All joking aside though Hun Batz does crazy damage, and his ult is applicable in literally every lane. his monkey toss is so easy to get kills with in the early game it's hilarious.

This is hands down one of the best smite videos in existence. The way all the guans lined up, the way the opposing team lined up in response after the first time, the mutual recognition of everyone of how badass and absurd the whole thing is, the whispers between Schileru and the Guans-- If you wanted me to show you the best smite's community had to offer back in the day, this video is the best example of it. I remember these videos very fondly
